Moving Tips for Newly Weds

After the wedding bells sound on your big day, the adventure is not yet over. Newly Weds soon face another big milestone, moving in.

Some couples may have already or are currently living together, these couples may have a head start on navigating some of the difficulties that accompany moving in together. For couples that have lived apart, this is not meant to be discouraging. This is an exciting new experience for the both of you! Here are some of our tips and tricks to making this merge as seamless as possible:

1. Establish a Home

First things first... you need to know where you are going! Where do the two of you want to live? Consider things like the location of your family, friends, work places and favorite places to visit. What is your budget? What kinds of things are you looking for in your home? Do you prefer a big flat back yard? Or the hustle and bustle of a condo downtown?

Talk these things through with your partner, then give Van der Lande & Associates a call. We can help walk you through the real estate details and set you up with our mortgage loan partners to finalize the financials.

2. Draft Inventory

What all do you and your partner own? If you already live together, you've probably already done this so this and the next step may be unnecessary. If you don't, this is a great tool to get a better idea of what you have and what you need.

3. Compare Items

Take the inventory you drafted and compare your lists. Say you both have a blender, so now together you have TWO blenders. Maybe you want both, but maybe you want to save that extra cabinet space for an air fryer. Maybe both of you own silverware sets, one of you owns a vacuum and neither of you own a living room rug. Now is a good time to get an idea of what you possess together, don't have and may have too much of.

Online flea markets are a great place to buy, sell and even trade gently owned items that you may need or need to get rid of! As always, if you don't have luck there, give away or donate unwanted items before throwing them away.

4. Prioritize Your Space

Depending on the size of your home and the amount of things you will be moving with you, it may be necessary to prioritize your space. Say there is one extra bedroom, he wants a man cave but you want a sun room, this may mean compromise or giving in some areas and taking in others. The same idea for your belongings, you may have to pick and choose what items will make it to your new house.

5. Schedule Movers

You won't be sorry. Moving is already stressful enough as is. Either schedule a team of movers or recruit friends and family to help you on moving day. Team work makes the dream work.

6. Plan Early

There is a lot that goes in to moving, and lots of little things that can come up along the way even if you planned perfectly. Get ahead of your moving goals.
