Meet, Brookhaven.

Families adore Brookhaven because it is so close, yet far from the heart of Atlanta. You are a short 15-30 minutes from Atlanta's main attractions, yet also can create a peaceful home in this north east Atlanta suburb. Brookhaven is located in western DeKalb County, Georgia. The city has a population of around 55,554 as of 2019, it is the largest city in Dekalb County. Brookhaven stretches over 12 square miles.


Districts

Within Brookhaven, there are several neighborhoods or districts within it including: Historic Brookhaven, Brookhaven Village, Lynwood Park, Peachtree Road, North Brookhaven, Buford Highway, East Buckhead and LaVista Park.


Schools

Brookhaven is known for solid primary and secondary schools. Public elementary schools within the city's limits include Ashford Park Elementary, Montclair Elementary, Montgomery Elementary and Woodward Elementary. Fernbank and John Lewis elementaries are located outside of the city limits, but also serve a portion of the city. Public middle schools include Chamblee Middle School and Sequoyah Middle School. Public high schools are Cross Keys High School and Chamblee Charter High School. There are three private schools in Brookhaven including: Lady of the Assumption Catholic School, St. Martin in the Fields of Episcopal School and Marist School.



Parks

Brookhaven is home to many parks! There are about a dozen within the city’s limits but two of the most popular are Brookhaven Park and Ashford Park. Brookhaven park has a dog park, grill pavilions, sports in a large open field (such as kickball or ultimate frisbee), picnic tables, bridges, walking trails and playgrounds of course. Ashford park is also very popular with a large playground, accessible parking and well-kept greenery.


Transportation

Major roads traveling through Brookhaven include: Ashford-Dunwoody Road (North-South access from 1285), Peachtree Road (Main North-South rd. part of Route 141), North Druid Hills Road (access from 185) and Buford Highway (North - South from Brookhaven to Buford, known for multicultural shops & restaurants).The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority, also known as MARTA, provides rail and bus transportation services for Brookhaven and the surrounding areas as well.


Events

Parents can find a plethora of kid-friendly activities in Brookhaven. On Wednesday evenings from May-October, there is a delicious food truck round-up at Blackburn Park. In September, the animal-friendly town hosts Doggy Dip Day at Murphey Candler Park’s Pool. A major Brookhaven event is the Cherry Blossom Festival, held every March, which features music, art vendors, food and a kid-zone.


Farmers Market

People from all over Atlanta come to Brookhaven from April - October to the Brookhaven Farmers Market on Saturdays from 9 a.m. - noon. Here you can harvest your fresh fruits, vegetables, cheeses, cookies and more for the week.


Shopping & Things to Do

Town Brookhaven is a complex that truly has all your necessities- and desires. Town Brookhaven includes groceries, shopping dinning, health & beauty, home furnishings and more. Some stores include Costco, LA Fitness, Marshalls, Publix, Redefined Home, Dress Up Boutique and more. Restaurants include The flying Biscuit Cafe, HOBNOB tavern, Bua Thai & sUSHI, Red Pepper Taqueria, Tropical Smoothie, Moe's and more.


Oglethorpe University Museum of Art

Brookhaven is also home to Oglethorpe University Museum of Art. OUMA is the only small liberal arts university museum to regularly show nationally and internationally recognized exhibitions. Admission is only $5 for adults and free for kids under 12.The museum is open Tuesday - Sunday 12-5 and Wednesdays till 8.



Additional Restaurants & Bars

Kaleidoscope Bistro & Pub

This restaurant is one of the most well known in Brookhaven. The Bistro & Pub serves “global comfort food” that has a unique look and taste each time. Flavors on the menu vary from Southern, Asian, Mexican and mediterranean origins. The Culture Trip described the establishment by saying “Kaleidoscope challenges traditional dishes with a modern twist in a fun and trendy setting.”



The Righteous Room

This laid back 20-year-old dive bar is located in north Brookhaven and offers reasonably priced food and booze. The bar features a juke box and magnolia tree growing in right in the middle of the building. This local hot spot is perfect for happy hours or sporting events. The establishment has an outdoor patio perfect for bringing your furry friends with.
